Eligibility:

The game jam is open to participants of all skill levels, with a focus on beginners. Individuals and teams (up to 7 people) are welcome to participate. In the spirit of collaboration and networking, we highly recommend working with others.

Submission Guidelines:

Game submissions may take any form (tabletop, digital, etc.) but must be easily accessible to the judges. We will not be able to provide feedback and suggestions if we cannot access the game.

Original Content:

Games must be original creations developed during the game jam. Use of pre-existing assets is allowed, but participants should give credit for any external resources.

Scope:

Participants should be mindful of the scope of their projects to ensure completion within the given timeframe. NO CRUNCHING! We highly encourage teams to focus on small, polished games over large, unfinished projects.

Theme Announcement:

A clear theme will be announced at the start of the game jam, and participants are encouraged (though not required) to base their games on this theme.

Optional Color Palette:

In addition to the jam theme, there is also an optional color palette. Participants may use this color palette as a base, or disregard it completely.

Day 1 Progress:

On Day 1, the idea quickly came together. Inspired by Slay, I embarked on a journey to learn how to create Hex maps, resulting in the birth of a new game. Although it lacked a name at this stage, my focus was on the core elements:

  • Player 1 and Player 2 Terrain
  • Two structures
  • Three unit types
  • Functions for Capture, Attack, and Coordinates
  • Camera control

Day 2 Progress:

With limited time on Day 2, I mostly organized and planned out my future moves. The game has implemented Action economy as well as a timer (Speedrunners wink wink). A few bugs were fixed, and the main features are mostly in place, including capturing unclaimed/claimed fields, attacking enemy castle/knights, random generation. And most importantly, I introduce you to ConHextions:

  • Speedrunning timer
  • Action and Gold economy
  • End scene
  • Score calculations
  • Unit prices

Day 3 Progress:

My plan for Day 3 was to get the Main Menu up and running, add 5 levels and a way to play them, and finish the system for posting stats. What I ended up doing is finishing the tutorial, the main menu, and levels. Today was definitely one of the harder days because I faced challenges and new code. But at the end, almost everything I wanted to do was done. What's left is to change a few function calls around so the levels go smoothly. Day 5 is going to be a day for playtesting, so Day 4 is going to have a lot of new features.

  • Main Menu
  • Standard Challenge mode
  • Tutorial
  • Saving and Loading levels
  • Global / Autoloads

Day 4 Progress:

The game is ready for playtesting! I'll add a way for everyone to send their best times, and the winner will have their name on the main menu! Game available for download.

  • Fixed Menu and Tutorial
  • Balancing
  • Levels 1 to 5
  • End Game Score
  • Playtesting
  • Time submission feature

Day 5 Progress:

After the official release on Day 4, I took a much-needed break. I spent some time implementing a Restart level system to enhance the player experience.

Day 6 Progress:

Day 6 followed a similar pattern, with personal commitments taking up most of my time. Despite the challenges, I managed to make some posts and polish certain aspects of the game. However, the game still lacks music, which I plan to compose on Day 6.

Although I attempted to set up a database for time submissions, complications arose, and I couldn't complete that part. The plan for Day 6 is to invest more time in bug fixing, adding music, and preparing for the final game release on the last day of the jam.

The game has been successfully uploaded to https://beardedguardiangames.itch.io/, and I'm pleased with the outcome. My little project is now live, and we're eagerly anticipating if players will show interest in submitting their best times.
